I am trying to create a discount coupon feature. Would this be hard to do?

Basically, i want to generate (add) coupons in the database and add the value (%). Maybe give also a period discount (first month etc).

Would this be hard to do?

Could you give me some pointers where to start? What files would need to be modified (checkout etc) ?
